Iganga, one of the 11 districts that form Busoga region (Call it the Kingdom of Busoga), lies on the country’s major Highway (A1 Road), a road which connects Uganda with other East African Countries like Kenya, Rwanda and the Congo. It is just 45km from Jinja, the Source of Africa’s longest River Nile and 128kms from the Capital City Kampala.
According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Iganga has a population of about 426,985 people, of whom 224,750 are women and 220,230 are male.
The district has a total surface area of 1,049.34km while 13.4km is its land under water. In general, there are two peak rainfalls, thus from April to June and from August to November. The two are punctuated by a dry season from December to March.
The pattern is also sometimes complicated by unpredicted rainfall failures in the peak months and heavy rains with hail stones in the dry months. Therefore, although the amount of rains is adequate for the growth of a variety of crops the weather is sometimes unpredictable.
Vegetation
The vegetation of Iganga District has adversely been affected by rapid population growth with its attendant problems of deforestation, environmental degradation, pollution etc. For areas in the North, the vegetation is Savannah and the south and South East, it’s semi deciduous forest.
Tourism Sites
The district has a number of hills and rocks like Nhenda in Nakigo sub county, Kabuli in Nawandala. These hills have got caves that exude historical memories and are tourism attractions. The district is also 118 kms to Bugisu region, the home to many other tourism sites like Mount Elgon, Kidepo National Park in Karamoja and Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa. On Top of this tourism menu, Bungee jumping is available at the banks of River Nile in Jinja.
While the main economic activities in Iganga are agriculture, fishing, Art and craft, boda riding and retail business, close to 24.3% of the population faces poverty challenges. Regarding education, 60% can write and read.
Elderly people
According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics UBOS 2024 National Housing and Population Census, people of 60 years and above amounted to 5% of the total population of 45 million people. This means that Iganga district has around 21,000 elderly people. The elderly face challenges of family neglect, food insecurity, high poverty levels among others.
